What’s Your Sauce? The Secret Ingredient That Makes You Stand Out

There are some people who walk into a room and immediately stand out.

You might not be able to explain exactly why.

Maybe it’s their energy. Maybe it’s their creativity. Maybe it’s their personality, their passion, or the way they see things differently.

There’s just… something there.

That something is the sauce.

And when I think about what “the sauce” means to me, I know it has very little to do with what’s actually in a bottle.

It’s about what you bring to everything you do.

That’s why being featured in Nike’s “It’s In The Sauce” campaign for the Air Max 1 PRM SE “Hot Sauce” meant so much to me.

When the Concept Hits Home

The idea behind “It’s In The Sauce” is simple: there’s a secret ingredient, energy, or X-factor that makes something truly stand out.

For me, that message hit home.

Because throughout my journey as a chef, I’ve always believed that what we do is about more than simply preparing food.

Food can be creative.

Food can tell a story.

Food can bring people together.

And the people behind the food can have an impact that reaches far beyond the kitchen.

That’s what made this campaign meaningful.

Nike’s “It’s In The Sauce” campaign celebrated chefs, foodies, and culinary entrepreneurs within communities of color and recognized the impact we have on food, culture, and our communities.

To be part of that was an unforgettable moment in my journey with Nike.

But what really stayed with me was the idea behind the campaign.

What is your sauce?

My Sauce Isn’t Just What I Cook

Being a chef is obviously about food.

But it’s not only about food.

There’s creativity in figuring out how to bring an idea to life. There’s personality in how you make people experience what you create. There’s passion in continuing to push yourself and refusing to settle for what has already been done.

And there’s entrepreneurship in recognizing that your skills, your ideas, and your perspective can create opportunities beyond the traditional path.

That’s the part of being a chef that I’m passionate about.

Because chefs are creators.

We are entrepreneurs.

We are storytellers.

And we are part of culture.

Food culture doesn’t exist without the people who are willing to create, experiment, build, and bring their own perspective to the table.

That perspective is part of the sauce.

Being Seen Beyond the Kitchen

One of the most meaningful parts of this experience was being recognized for what happens outside of the kitchen.

That matters.

There’s something powerful about seeing chefs recognized not just for what they can put on a plate, but for what they represent.

Our creativity.

Our entrepreneurship.

Our influence.

Our culture.

The communities we contribute to.

Being featured in a campaign like this reminded me that the identity of a chef doesn’t have to stop at the kitchen door.

There is room to build.

There is room to create.

There is room to challenge expectations.

There is room to trailblaze.

And there is room for the next generation to see themselves doing more.

Chefs Are Culture

The older I get and the more I continue on this journey, the more I realize that being a chef is about creating experiences and leaving something behind.

It’s about the ideas you introduce.

The people you inspire.

The opportunities you create.

The boundaries you decide not to accept.

That’s why I keep coming back to those four ideas:

Chefs are creators.

We take an idea and turn it into something people can experience.

Chefs are entrepreneurs.

We can turn our skills and creativity into something bigger than a job.

Chefs are storytellers.

Every dish, every concept, and every experience can carry a piece of who we are.

Chefs are culture.

What we create can influence how people connect with food, community, and each other.

That’s bigger than a kitchen.

And that’s why representation and recognition matter.

Keep Pushing the Boundaries

Being part of Nike’s “It’s In The Sauce” campaign was another reminder of why I want to keep pushing.

I want to continue trailblazing.

I want to continue challenging expectations.

I want to continue creating opportunities.

And most importantly, I want the next generation of chefs to understand that they don’t have to limit themselves to the traditional definition of what a chef can be.

Your culinary talent can open doors.

Your creativity can take you places.

Your entrepreneurial mindset can build something of your own.

Your voice can contribute to culture.

And your story can inspire someone else.

But you have to bring your sauce with you.

So, What’s Your Sauce?

I think everybody has something that makes them different.

Something that can’t be copied.

Something that comes from your experiences, your passion, your creativity, your personality, and the way you choose to show up.

That’s your sauce.

For me, the sauce is the energy I bring to the kitchen and beyond it. It’s the creativity, the drive, the entrepreneurial spirit, and the desire to keep pushing what’s possible for a chef.

It’s the willingness to stand out.

To challenge expectations.

To create.

To build.

To inspire.

And to keep moving forward.

Because the sauce isn’t just what you make.

It’s what makes you different.

So whatever your craft is, whatever your industry is, whatever dream you’re chasing—find your sauce and own it.

There’s something different about the ones who carry the sauce.

And I plan to keep bringing mine.

It’s in the Sauce. 🌶️
