Article: The Chef Got Called Into the Game, and I Was Ready!

The Chef Got Called Into the Game, and I Was Ready!

One of those experiences that reminds you you’re exactly where you’re supposed to be.

Not because you planned every step that got you there.

Not because you expected the opportunity.

But because you find yourself in the middle of something bigger than what people might expect from you—and suddenly, it makes perfect sense.

That’s how I felt being part of the Dos Equis CFB Tailgate Throwdown “Real Ones” campaign.

College football. Tailgates. Sports. Entertainment. Culture.

And me—the chef.

Except I didn’t just show up to cook.

I showed up to create, collaborate, mentor, entertain, and be part of the experience.

And that distinction matters.

Welcome to the Tailgate

The Dos Equis CFB Tailgate Throwdown “Real Ones” campaign was about celebrating some of the most passionate college football fans and giving them the opportunity to turn their dream tailgate into reality.

Three lucky sports fans got the chance to bring those visions to life, with some serious talent helping make it happen.

And that’s where things got interesting.

Because this wasn’t just about food.

This was about fandom.

Competition.

Creativity.

Sports.

Entertainment.

And the culture that surrounds college football.

The kind of environment where a tailgate becomes more than a meal. It becomes an experience.

And I got to be part of it.

Look at the Room

One of the things that made the experience especially memorable was the people involved.

Joel McHale joined as a judge.

Heisman Trophy winner Mark Ingram II and I served as mentors.

We worked with contestants representing different college football fanbases, each bringing their own passion and vision to the experience.

And being around two incredible talents at the top of their respective fields was a career-defining experience for me.

But one of the coolest parts was simply getting to witness Joel and Mark doing what they do best—up close and in person.

There’s something different about seeing people operate at that level.

The energy.

The presence.

The way they command the moment.

It was fun. It was creative. It was high energy.

And for me, it was another reminder that sometimes the best opportunities come when you step outside the lane people expect you to stay in.

I Didn’t Just Show Up to Cook

That’s probably the biggest takeaway I took from the experience.

I didn’t just show up to cook.

I showed up as a chef, creator, collaborator, mentor, and representative of culinary culture.

That’s a bigger role.

And it’s one I’m excited about.

Because food has always had a natural connection to sports and culture.

Think about what happens around a game.

People gather.

They celebrate.

They compete.

They tell stories.

They create memories.

And food is right there in the middle of it.

So why shouldn’t the chef be there too?

Why shouldn’t chefs have a voice in those experiences?

Why shouldn’t we be part of the conversations happening around sports, entertainment, brands, and culture?

We should.

The chef’s seat belongs at the table.

The Kitchen Is the Foundation—Not the Ceiling

I love the kitchen.

It’s where I developed my craft.

It’s where food comes to life.

It’s where creativity becomes something people can experience.

But I don’t believe the kitchen has to be the limit of what a chef can do.

The kitchen can be the foundation without becoming the ceiling.

A chef can create.

A chef can collaborate.

A chef can mentor.

A chef can tell stories.

A chef can contribute to culture.

A chef can work with brands.

A chef can step into sports.

A chef can be part of entertainment.

And a chef can help shape experiences that have nothing to do with a traditional restaurant kitchen.

That’s the direction I want to keep moving in.

Where Food, Sports, and Culture Meet

Being part of the Dos Equis experience reinforced something I’ve been building toward throughout my journey:

Food belongs everywhere people come together.

And when you combine food with sports, entertainment, and culture, there’s an opportunity to create something bigger than any one of those things on its own.

That’s what made this experience special for me.

It wasn’t simply about being connected to a major brand.

It was about being trusted to contribute to an experience where different worlds came together.

Sports fans.

Food.

Entertainment.

Culture.

Brand experiences.

And a chef right in the middle of it.

That’s powerful.

Chefs Can Play in Every Arena

I want to keep pushing that idea forward.

Because I know there are chefs out there who see themselves as more than what happens behind a kitchen line.

They’re creators.

They’re entrepreneurs.

They’re storytellers.

They’re mentors.

They’re builders.

They’re cultural contributors.

And they deserve opportunities to explore those sides of themselves.

That’s part of the bigger vision for me.

To continue creating.

To continue collaborating.

To continue pushing boundaries.

And to show the next generation of chefs that there are more possibilities available to them than they might realize.

You can love the kitchen and still step outside of it.

You can be a chef and still play in other arenas.

You can bring your culinary perspective into sports, entertainment, culture, and brand experiences.

You just have to be willing to step through the door when it opens.

The Next Arena Is Calling

I’m grateful to the Dos Equis team for trusting me to be part of such a special campaign.

Looking back, what stands out isn’t just the opportunity itself.

It’s what the opportunity represented.

It reminded me that the role of a chef can continue to evolve.

That our craft can open doors.

That food can connect worlds.

And that there is a seat at the table for chefs when sports, culture, entertainment, and brands come together.

I didn’t just show up to cook.

I showed up to create.

To collaborate.

To mentor.

To represent.

To push.

And to prove that the chef’s seat isn’t confined to the kitchen.

The kitchen is where we sharpen the craft.

The world is where we get to use it.

And if there’s one thing I know after this experience, it’s this:

Chefs can play in every arena.

And I’m just getting warmed up. 🔥
